| Abstract | The growth in the consumption of electric and electronic equipment (EEE) in
all of Brazil has been presenting problems concerning the management of
the waste generated by these devices.
The waste electric and electronic equipment (WEEE), aside from containing
materials which may be recycled and recovered, has various toxic and
polluting substances, such as heavy metals. The incorrect handling and/or
disposal of WEEE has the potential of causing human health and
environmental problems, through the contamination, mainly, of the soil,
and of ground water.
After identifying these potential environmental problems, Fundação Estadual
do Meio Ambiente (lit.: the State Natural Environment Foundation) - FEAM
intends, with this diagnosis, to initiate discussions involving the creation of
legislation and public policies related to the management of this type of
waste in the state of Minas Gerais.
Therefore, with the aim of obtaining information concerning the generation
and destination of EEE generated waste in the state of Minas Gerais, this
project had as its objective obtaining a preliminary estimate of the current
and future generation of waste electric and electronic equipment (WEEE), in
order to aid in the decision making process regarding the search for a
solution for the environmental problems resulting from inadequate waste
management. |
